Aural Spaces 2024

From 12 to 15 December, Aural Spaces will bring new dimensions to live music experience in 4DSOUND

4DSOUND at The Concertgebouw

We are happy to share that Aural spaces will be back at Het Concertgebouw from December 12th to 15th. Aural Spaces offers visitors a rare and unique 4D audio-visual experience, blending music and sound with the cutting-edge technology of 4DSOUND for an adventurous exploration. With 41 speakers spread throughout the empty historical concert hall, a unique 4-dimensional sound experience is created. Aural Spaces explores the boundaries between sound and space, blurring them and merging them. The result is a completely immersive listening experience that lets you discover and feel how the music moves through space!

The programme is born out of a collaborative effort between The Concertgebouw (Concervrienden & Entrée), 4DSOUND, and FIBER Festival.

This year’s program includes not only concerts but also listening sessions, masterclasses, and workshops, featuring the Interactive session: Bring Your Own Sounds, where participants will capture sounds from their surroundings, transforming them into a 4D listening experience. The Workshop Makers: Space as a Collective Sonic Instrument addresses the topic of listening and sonic composition through the lens of spatial sound. Through a collaborative process, participants will gather sounds as a group and create spatial experiments using a 4DSOUND system. Some other programme components – in particular the listening sessions ‘Low Stimuli’ and ‘Seeing With Your Ears’ – are tailored to people with auditory, visual or physical disabilities. All components form a special meeting of art and human interactions.

Interactive Session: Bring Your Own Sounds
14:30 – 15:30 | 12 Dec.

Sound is a crucial medium to orient ourselves in the spaces we travel and reside in every day. While music comes to us through speakers in a stereo manner, our ears listen to an outside world made up of 360-degree sound. We also call this spatial sound. In this interactive session of 1,5 hours, you will be introduced to spatial listening and learn about the 4DSOUND system. Beforehand, you will capture sounds from your own surroundings using audio recording on your smartphone. We will turn them into a variety of listening experiences.

No technical or musical skills are needed to participate. More info about how to participate here.

Introducing: Loraine James

In recent years, Loraine James has emerged as one of the most forward-thinking producers of the moment. Experimental never stands synonymous with inaccessibility within James’ playful vocabulary: a dizzying mix of jazz, electronica, UK drill, pop and grime. With her album For You And I, she seeks out the raw edges, with the catchy pop melody often forming the springboard for bold experimentation.

Successor Reflection is a more streamlined and minimalist project that shows the introspective and intimate side of club music. Building Something Beautiful For Me (2022), was James’s tribute to the iconic New York minimal composer Julius Eastman, a musical reinterpretation and response to his legacy. In 2023, she released the LP Gentle Confrontation, which explores both her past and present. James says it’s the record she would have liked to have made as a teenager – the album’s musical tendencies reflecting that period in her life. In between albums, James delves into countless impulsive projects – such as her unruly alter ego Whatever The Weather – in which the sheer joy of her creative process is palpable.

During Aural Spaces, James will apply her boundless creativity and expressive, almost diary-like approach within the 4DS Soundsystem, which will of course result in a singular musical experience. For this special occasion, she will perform a brand new musical project, commissioned for Aural Spaces.

This concert is co-presented and commissioned by FIBER Festival and Concertvrienden, Entrée and 4DSOUND. Supported and co-produced by MONOM.
