This was Aural Spaces 2024

We want to thank you for listening with us

A year in preparation, but the finale of Aural Spaces took place last week Sunday evening. Thank you for joining us on this sonic journey! For four days, we were immersed in spatial sound and light; from short listening pieces composed by a collective of more than 15 artists, the delicate, glitchy rhythms of Loriane James (live), concerts by CTM (live) and Marijn & Julia (live), to the haunted echoes and emotional landscapes by Evita Manji and vast, sizzling sound experience by William Russell.

On Friday, Loraine James debuted a brand-new piece, commissioned by FIBER for Aural Spaces. The performance immersed listeners in a 4D sound experience, seamlessly transitioning from her signature glitchy, jazz-inspired beats to ambient sonic landscapes. This created an enchanting atmosphere that fitted perfectly within the historic Recital Hall of the Concertgebouw. James developed this listening piece during a residency at MONOM Studios, where she experimented with 4D sound technology for the first time.

Evita Manji explored the spatial possibilities of sound by playing with echoes, intertwining them with the rhythmic pulse of music. She performed Echo(location) Chamber, a sonic piece that transforms the echo chamber from a simple loop of repetition into a dynamic environment where soundwaves bounce and return, revealing the contours of an emotional landscape hidden within the void. Echo(location) Chamber is co-present by MONOM.

We want to thank everyone who participated in this event! Massive thanks you to all the artists who performed, to workshop guides Robin Koek and Fani Konstantinidou, to all our partners, and to you for listening with us at Aural Spaces!

Aural Spaces is a collaboration between Concertvrienden, Jouwentree, Fiberfestival, 4DSOUND with the support of Monomstudios. Gratitude to Katarzyna Stuczyńska Annex Agency, George Lyzander and Eva Greene at Black Acre.
