FIBER presents artists at RETUNE 2016

As part of a new network of European festivals and platforms

Next week we travel to Berlin for Retune Festival 2016. As part of our ongoing European Festival Network activities we are proud to present two artists from our network within one of this year’s festival topics ‘Neuronal Creation’. Both Mischa Daams (NL) and Dries Depoorter (BE / NL) will present their latest projects and will actively engage with the festival participants through presentations, meetups and a workshop. The goal of this collaboration is to support the development of the artistic productions of these artists and to connect them with Retune’s unique network and knowledge about machine learning.

FIBER x Retune 2016 Programme (detailed info below)
– Mischa Daams (NL) – Presentation, Break-Out Session & Installation
– Dries Depoorter (BE / NL) – Presentation, Workshop & Installation

Why this project?
This project is part of a new network of European festival and platforms, who are connecting their artistic programmes, research facilities and residency opportunities to co-create new artistic productions and match-making programmes. One of the network goals of the network will be the presentation of local artists in different festivals to stimulate the exchange of unique knowledge, skills and research areas. By connecting these elements with a series of projects across this European network, FIBER and its partners are building a long-term talent development programme, and thus grow an environment to launch new artistic productions.

About Retune
The Retune Festival is an experimental laboratory at the intersection of art, design and technology. It will take place in Berlin from October 6 – 8, 2016. Retune will transform the space of an old schoolbuilding into experimental design studios, workshops, lecture halls, and offline chatrooms. Exhibitions, talks, and workshops are clustered around four main themes: #Immersed Narratives / # Neuronal Creation / # Networked Transplantations / # Creative Production

Mischa Daams (NL)

Introduction
After the first collaboration during between FIBER and Dutch artist Mischa Daams at the FIBER Festival 2015, both join forces for the presentation of a work-in- progress project at Retune. Currently Daams is working on a new installation called ‘Origin: Cycle’; an algorithmic choreography and film experience, created by a dance between a TV screen and a camera. At Retune Mischa will present the installation and his research process which was part of the Summer Sessions 2016 in collaboration with V2_. With the support of FIBER and the Retune community he will also explore a new phase in the creation of ‘Origin’; the application and potential of machine learning.

Installation: ‘Origin: Cycle’
With his project ‘Origin’, Mischa Daams sets out immersive audiovisual expeditions into the abstract, organic universe that results from a simple feedback loop between an lcd screen and a video camera. These expeditions exploit imperfections in display technology and demand a cybernetic dialog with this astonishing emergent realm. “Cycle” is the first attempt of an assisted exploration in which a repetitive rhythm unfolds in organic complexity.

‘Origin: Cycle’ was realised and produced as part of the Summer Sessions 2016 in collaboration with V2_, lab for the unstable media at Art Centre Nabi.

Presentation: ‘Notes on Origin’
In his talk, Mischa Daams outlines his fascination for systems in which perception, control and surprising behaviour are linked together. He will discuss the ideas and methods surrounding his project Origin and the making of the first video installation / assisted expedition “Cycle”, as shown at Retune. Mischa will conclude with future steps for which he seeks collaboration with experts in deep neural algorithms to make an endless film.

Work session: ‘An endless film?’
Following his talk, Mischa Daams invites the audience for a breakout session to discuss the question if an automated expedition could be conceived that is self-conscious, self-steering and thus self-unfolding. Specifically Mischa would like to discuss the potential of computer vision, neural networks and deep algorithms to analyse and cybernetically perform the unfolding of his Origin project.

Dries Depoorter (BE / NL)

Introduction

Assembling, sharing and experimenting with private data of himself and random people found on the internet, digital artist Dries Depoorter tackles in a thought-provoking way issues like social identity, big data sharing, encryption and (the lack of) protection of our online privacy. At Retune he will also present his latest experiments connected to the theme Neuronal Creation.

Workshop: Browser History Dating
Dries Depoorter is currently working on a dating website where you have to upload you browser history to make a match. In this workshop we gonna think about how we can shape the algoritme by doing fun experiments with people browser history. Can you choose your date only by looking into his or her browser history? (For this workshop you don’t need to give away your browser history, but you can meet the love of your life!)

The workshop Browser History Dating is based on one of the experiments Dries Depoorter developed during the 3×3 event series at V2_.
