<itunes:summary>The intense bodily experience of listening and dancing to techno is often regarded as a spiritual experience. Russian DJ Yuka has a strong feeling towards the cosmic and the mystical, always looking for harmony. That is why she leaves cold Moscow behind during winter to hibernate in Varanesi, the spiritual capital of the world. The Indian city has been a source of inspiration for the mix of our first female contributor.

Yuka, aka Irina Solobutova was born in Siberia in the city of Bratsk and moved to Moscow in 1998 where she steadily built a reputation for herself playing deep-minimal techno. Through labels such as Pro-Tez and Fullpanda Records she met like-minded people such as Anton Kubikov (half of SCSI-9), Dasha Rush and Dino Sabatini. “Many things influence me (art, nature, people), but Fullpanda Records gives the biggest boost of energy. This label unites so many interesting musicians and artists, we all are in a collaboration more or less. It affects me very much.”

Another big influence is Varanasi. Every year the oldest still inhabited city in the world celebrates the ‘festival of lights of the gods’ (Dev Deepawali). During that time the city is decorated, oil lamps are set afloat on the river and devotees take a holy bath in the Ganges. “I've been in Varanasi many times. It's my favorite city in India, I come there again and again, it's a very powerful and a special place that changes you every time you visit.”

Siberia and Varanasi are both places that spark the western imagination; Siberia cold, empty, industrial and oppressive, while India is colourful, warm and mesmerizing. In a sense these divergent characteristics can also be experienced in techno music. “While my music is always abstract, experimental, cold and dark, I try to keep it beautiful and harmonious, [..] the repetitions of rhythmic patterns and sounds should immerse the listener into a hypnotic state.”

As such, a DJ can be seen as a shaman, an ‘harmonic navigator’, whom; “through a tapestry of mind-bending music, [...] takes the dancers on an overnight journey, a psychic voyage and, with one finger on the pulse of the adventure and the other on the turntables, gives the dancers a safe passage back down to earth” (Hutson 1999 61). “When I create a mix I try to catch the listener's attention and hold it gently through the whole story. On the way I change the mood to go deeper or give more groove, but all should be harmonious. It's like a state of trance.”

On a visual level she looked for work that illustrates this abstract, mystical yet playful feeling and came up with artists such as Paul Klee, Salvador Dali, and Kazimir Malevich, but eventually chose a photograph taken in Varanasi by Ajay Jacob, a friend of Yuka, “It’s as an illustration to my music - laconic, hypnotic, dark but beautiful, cold and mystic, but not too much.” So, for the next hour, enjoy this mix of cold and dark music as a warm holy bath of sound!

<itunes:summary>“It’s a field for crazy people” is a way to categorize the group of people with an obsessive love for hardware and modular synths as documented in the film; ‘I Dream of Wires’. CCO seems to be one of them, considering the list of equipment he used to create the seventeenth addition to our series. A 303, an 808, various modular synths and a sequencer were among the machines he hooked-up to create this timeless live performance of ‘futuristic’ acid.

His releases on Mathematics Recordings, Lux Rec, Drumpoet and Plak Records convey a strong relation to Detroit Techno and Chicago House. “Stuff like early Derrick May, Drexciya and all their aliases, Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, Moodyman, Aphex Twin and the current lively deep music scene in Scandinavian countries. Especially Legowelt and the The Hague scene are a great influence, but I still listen to a broad variety of music; from jazz (Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders) and funk / soul (early Lonnie Liston Smith, Minnie Ripperton) to all kinds of disco (Moroder, Rinder), krautrock (Can Neu!, early Tangerine Dream) as well as some dark ambient/ drone, 70ies film scores.”

The latter forms a new challenge offered by his friends in Zurich at the IOIC (Institute of Incoherent Cinematography): “They show silent movies in theatres without any sound, which are then scored live by musicians. As a musician, this is a great experience, as one has to time the music very drastically and focus on the screen a lot when writing and playing the music. I did this two times so far and both times it was fun – once I scored Metropolis and once Aelita.”

The themes that come forward in the above mentioned movies are common among his visual influences: “Moody landscapes (including urban aesthetics) and working class aesthetics/revolutionary politics (hence the artist name Contra Communem Opinionem). Both of these conceptual images focus on contradictions, on tensions and dialectical thoughts. It is the warmth shining through in a cold place, for example the sad beauty of snowy mountains or the urban aesthetics of industrial machinery and their potential for both emancipation as well as repression of the masses.”

The podcasts’ accompanying artwork is based on the movie Blade Runner, which deals with such contradictions. The moral question what it is to be human is an important theme in the movie as cyborgs dream of having an authentic life on earth. Just like contemporary producers, who nowadays have all the digital technology at their disposal and yet will always have a melancholic feeling towards the ‘high-tech’ materiality of blinking lights, knobs and faders of modular synths and vintage drum computers.

“This mix is actually a rehearsal session for a gig I had at Club Cabaret in Zürich on 29th of March 2013. It was recorded in my own little home studio with the exact same setup as used live. My release “Music for Cosmonauts” on Lux was a re-recording of one of my live sets as well. Check it out!”

<itunes:summary>With fall looming and times of darkness ahead, it is the perfect time to present the next installment of the FIBER Podcast. Berlin based DJ and producer Refracted challenges the listener to experience the various layers of deep techno.
“This mix was recorded in a very special afterhour session with close friends at my home in Berlin. This recording is made with love and dedicated to them.”

For Refracted (Alex) It all started back in 2000 with Birmingham techno: “Thanks to a friend of mine I found out about this Spanish radio program (Zona 3) which played techno mixes on Friday- and Saturday nights. I used to lie down in bed with my headphones and just listen to the mixes. Listening to these new sounds so intensely, I really felt the music. It conveyed feelings and emotions no other music had done before. The presenter of the show Sonia Briz transmitted a huge love and admiration for every artist that it really set you into the mood for the mix. Thanks to her I discovered artists such as Oscar Mulero, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Surgeon, Regis, Christian Wunsch; dark, raw and industrial techno at its best.”

Before his acquaintance with electronic music, Alex came from quite a varied musical background. His older brother was of great influence and responsible for getting him interested in music. “I used to borrow all his tapes and listen to them non stop. There was so much to choose from; Queen and Bowie, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, and finally Depeche Mode and Joy Division. In hindsight I was already shaping up my path towards electronic sounds without even realising it.”

Finding connections between genres and artists is one of the joys of a music lover. “I am lucky to have met many like minded people in this incredible city (Berlin) and we always enjoy getting together to play records.”

After a while the repetitive mode of techno can become a bit boring. Therefore, an outing to another genre can be quite refreshing. “I feel very much inspired by ambient and experimental music. There are too many artists and labels to mention but Thomas Köner, Eleh, Kevin Drumm, Pan American, Raime, Ezekiel Honig are the ones who caught my special attention. Labels such as Digitalis, Type, Further or Blackest ever Black can't seem to go wrong.”

These days the artists from the Prologue label constantly manage to amaze and inspire. Artists such as Donato Dozzy, Mike Parker and Dino Sabatini have been creating sounds that never disappoint. “Other artists that inspire me are; Natural/Electronic.System, Alan Backdrop and Air Protection Office. I'm lucky to have become quite good friends with most of them and have to say that, be it either through their mixes or their tracks, I always feel a very deep connection with the sounds and the taste. The same can be said for the Prologue artists.”

The music is dark just like Refracted preferred color black. “There is something very interesting and beautiful in Dark music. It's elegant, meaningful and it can also get very deep. If you understand it you love it. But I can see why it's not for everyone.”
This love for darkness also prolongs in his visual inspiration sources “I'm into abstract photography. A good idea of what inspires me can be seen in my tumblr page (http://alex-eme.tumblr.com/). Dark imagery, the universe, space and the female body are all sources of inspiration. These elements also are seen in the artwork. “The image for this podcast perfectly represents what I want my listeners to experience while hearing my music or mixes.”

Soon Refracted will release an EP on Silent Season. Follow us for more information.

<itunes:summary>An important source of inspiration for Fedbymachines is the way technology and humanity interact. This also became apparent when we first met him at Freemote festival last December. We interrupted a guy who was surrounded by devices, preparing for his first live performance. He told us he was a little nervous, but when we saw him unified with his equipment on stage, absolutely killing it, we knew we had to ask him for a podcast.

Fedbymachines’ music is characterised as deep ambient garage, a style that developed out of a broad taste in music: “Boards of Canada, LFO (basically all the early Warp stuff), Burial, Massive Attack, Carl Craig, but in more general terms early hiphop, house, techno, dub, jazz, 90s IDM and film music”. He even came close to the source as he attended a lot of acid parties when he was living in Chicago in the mid 90’s. “Recently I have been listening a lot to Sepalcure, Ak0pian, Synkro and fellow producers from the Night Shift Collective I am part of.”

The name Night Shift Collective immediately brings to mind images of gloom, melancholy and solitude. Derelict cities, industrial wastelands, dusty old factories and abandoned railroad tracks going nowhere are the kinds of images Fedbymachines draws his visual inspiration from.
“I think these always leave an impression on me, because they strike me as symbols of the continuous recycling of cities, the rise and fall of technologies, cultural phenomena, architecture and ways of living. The idea of something still there, but lost, severed by the passing of time. For me, these are images of forgotten dreams and moments.”
The man-machine interaction is also an important source of inspiration: “In its most literal form, this manifests itself in interfaces used to control music and sound (for instance Konkreet Performer), but in a more general sense, works and installation by artists like Panamarenko and Studio Roosegaarde.”

“Furthermore, my music and mixes always breathe an atmosphere of night and rain, although in my mixes I often use this as a contrast with the upbeat, ‘light’ side of music. This mix features the many faces of garage and garage-related music and is built up like a dramatic plot with a happy ending. It starts off with a dark, industrial atmosphere with some eastern European cinematics, and moves on to Synkro's emotional track ‘Viewpoint’ and more upbeat yet melancholic garage tracks. Then the whole thing moves into the realm of the acid techno influenced beats of Blawan (a shout-out to my Chicago days), mixed with more dub-infused tracks, ending in the hyperactivity, glitchyness and euphoria of Julien Mier's ‘Rainbow Covered Home’.”

<itunes:summary>A gloomy atmosphere of decay and social problems are often features of industrial cities, but these surroundings of despair and poverty can also serve as ground for blooming centres of creativity. Klen, originating from Rotterdam, gets inspired by these urban issues, so it is not surprising that after more than 20 years of experience as DJ and vinyl collector he has developed a preference for the more experimental and alternative side of Detroit techno/electro. The thirteenth FIBER podcast showcases this in a rhythm of organised chaos. Klen will also perform on 24th of March during the NIGHT programme of the second edition of FIBER Festival.

Growing up in the 80’s, Klen listened to all sorts of music “From electronic wave to early electro rap, from hiphop to early house and from industrial rock to jazz and funk. Early hiphop (MarleyMarl, Craig Gee, EPMD) was my first big love, but this changed drastically when I first heard the more jackin' type sound of Chicago house in the local clubs in Rotterdam. This made me go to record stores to look for more dance orientated material, with beats that reminded me of the early rap and industrial wave sound that I loved so much. The first Detroit techno records followed shortly after and before I knew it, I was digging crates for records that had the NSC (Detroit mastering) logo in the run-out groove. The most influential artists back then and still are to me now are Underground Resistance, Drexciya, Cybotron/Juan Atkins, early Ectomorph/Flexitone, Anthony Shakir, DBX, Rob Hood and so on. Also the UK IDM (Autechre, AFX) and the techno from Berlin (Basic Channel) had a huge impact on me as a DJ in the mid 90's”

Next to the creative side, Klen is also involved with the more business side of things. He has been working at Clone since 1997 and since 2000 he has been running labels such as Frustrated Funk, Frantic Flowers and Harbour City Sorrow. “I have seen things go full circle, but I prefer sticking to the classics. We have seen a lot of sub-genres come and go. Every sub-genre brings its originators, but most of the time you see that after the hype period people grab back to the classic templates of techno and house. Even technology seems to have the same cycles; after periods of experimentation of new technologies people seem to get tired of it and go back to simple templates and lo-fi solutions. Too many technical options seem to kill creativity. The hype/revival of proper Berlin techno is a good example of that. It's all about functionality again.”

Educated as a technical drawer and designer, Klen particulary likes art and architecture that is very technical and abstract, such as creations by Lebbeus Woods and Amsterdam-based artist Delta.”I’m also a big fan of Japanese novels and movies from Taiyo Matsumoto, Katsuhiro Otomo, Hayao Miyazaki and the likes. Maybe ‘cause of their ideas of living in a future city. As a designer for multiple record labels I am also inspired by other designers in this scene, but most of all, my inspiration comes from the city and its people. I'm obsessed by the decay, pauperisation, destruction and renewal of the city and the people that have to cope with it. The negative always had a big influence on me. That's why the themes of my music are often related to these subjects. What I love in art is closely related to this. A good combination of the abstract/geometric with decay and organized chaos”.

“If I need to visualise the sound of this podcast the destruction of Neo Tokyo in the graphic novel ‘Akira’
by Katsuhiro Otomo's comes close. It fits to the struggle and decay of the city of Detroit (with its abandoned buildings) where most of the music I play is coming from.”

<itunes:summary>As the preparations for the second edition of FIBER Festival are in full swing, a nice, energetic mix from a Ukrainian city with the eloquent name of Dnipropetrovsk is well appreciated. The twelfth FIBER podcast brings us back to the caverns we inhabited at ClubTransmediale two weeks ago and is brought to you by the talented duo Subforms.

The name Subforms is knowingly chosen by Yevgeny Konovalov and Dmitry Oleynik. It refers to their atmospheric style that can be seen as a sub-form, or in other words, an under-current between genres like ambient, dub and deep techno. This personal style developed over the years: “I have an extensive taste in music,” says Yevgeny, “so the formation process was quite lengthy, but the turning point came when I listened to music by Basic Channel, Scape and Raster Noton. Later on, I discovered Echochord and Modern Love, these labels changed my perception of music. I fell in love!”

The formation of their extensive taste transgressed to their approach of production. “We don’t care about genre, we just like to express our moods and feelings through music.” Music is a subliminal mode of expressing experiences in life. This manifested itself in Subforms’ dreamlike sounds which have the ability to bring the listener to another dimension, a remote place on the border of reality. Their genre-crossing approach combines deep ambient sounds, delayed chord pads and a techno groove resulting in a spacious sound.

This notion of space is also clearly reflected in the accompanying artwork by French photographer Denis Olivier. His surreal landscapes, with pieces of reality and fantasy closely intertwined, seem directly taken from a dream. A feeling that has the alienating effect that you experience when you see the light after a long session of quality music. So enjoy this mix of spacious and yet energetic sounds from the east!

<itunes:summary>The German philosopher Friedrich Kittler once argued: "The development of the internet has more to do with human beings becoming a reflection of their technologies…. After all, it is we who adapt to the machine. The machine does not adapt to us.” (The Guardian 28/12/11)
A claim that winks to Alan Backdrop, a man with a profound love for vinyl. He says his life spins in circles. During long periods of research and experimentation in music he often falls for dark and gloomy sounds. But at some point he comes full circle and is in need for something more light and colourful. As if the record passes the light pin on the turntable. The eleventh FIBER Podcast has been recorded during one of these moments.

The moment Alan became hooked on techno music was when he discovered Luca Morris, an Italian artist who mixed Detroit and German techno in the nineties. “More than often I listened to his mixes made between 1998 and 2001. Mixes that cannot be found on the web, they are like a sort of relic in the hands of the guys who experienced the magic at that time”.

Another great influence was Monolake’s ‘Polygon Cities’, an album Alan bought at Hardwax when he visited Berlin for the first time, back in 2005. The impact of Monolake’s music made him speechless: “I listened the cd time after time and kept asking myself where that sound came from”. His concept of music was taking shape and the following year he bought turntables and started collecting vinyl.

2006 also gave birth to ‘Thursdaydeep’, a laboratory equipped with studio monitors where Alan and his friends Enrico a.k.a. Status End and Stefano a.k.a. Oldste could experiment.
“Initially I sought my personal sound in deep minimal-techno”. But all the changes and nuances in genre influenced him and developed into an aesthetic, that kept floating in his mind. “There was a specific kind of sound, a sound that binds the surreal atmospheres of Monolake’s album, that bewitched me to the nineties techno played by Luca Morris, full of TR-808 and -909 sounds I love. The almost total identification of this sound occurred in 2008 with the first releases of Donato Dozzy on Aquaplano with Nuel.”

For this mix Alan grouped vinyls with smooth sounds in sleeves and dollies coloured in blue, teal, yellow, orange and white. Colours and artworks are important to him. “I started to mix imagining being light and surrounded by floating objects. I hope listening to this mix conveys this lightness”. A feeling also reflected in ‘Green House’, this podcast’s accompanying artwork by South-Korean artist Kyung Woo Han.

<itunes:summary>‘No tricks only tracks’. The tenth FIBER podcast is an ambient mix by Belgian dreamer Evad,
whose accompanying artwork perfectly reflects his set and his approach to mixing.

Evad aka Dave Volkaerts has a profound love for deep- and trippy house, techno and ambient. A purist who runs the Mixture podcast series with contributions by Eric Cloutier and ESHU interspersed with his own mixes.
Especially his predilection with ambient comes forward in this podcast. “There are many tracks I wanted to include in this mix, but this is how it turned out. I only choose a track to open the mix with, after that nothing was planned, all decisions were made on the spot. The spontaneous and subjective feature is a very important aspect to me when making a mix. Only then you can surrender yourself to the music.”

This approach resembles the Surrealist technique called automatism which “denotes automatic actions and involuntary processes that are not under conscious control”. The Surrealists believed it was a higher form of behaviour. For them, automatism could express the creative force of what they believed was the unconscious in art.”

Evad underlines this: “I try to enjoy life at its fullest in all its aspects. I love to live, I guess this mentality reflects in my approach to music and how I allow myself to be influenced: by everything, going from current political events to a beautiful holiday with my even more beautiful girlfriend. But I'm also a dreamer, I've always been and I always will be”

That’s why he never goes out clubbing anymore. It makes him feel like being woken in the middle of a beautiful dream.“ It’s very important I can focus myself 100% on the music. I don't like the audience, the smell, beer on my shirt, people stepping on my feet, or people talking when they should shut up. I can only enjoy music these days when I'm at home or in my car, alone. I hope that with my contribution to the Fiber podcast series, people will find the appropriate intimate moment to listen to it.”

Let the jubilee FIBER podcast take you on a journey and let your thoughts wander off. In music one can find room for interpretation just like in the added artwork by Salvador Dali or other visual influences like David Lynch’s films and series like the X-files and Fringe. Works which can only be explained by the surreal and the sometimes experimental characteristics. “All these little aspects and interests make me the person I am today, with only one general device: the sky is the limit.”

<itunes:summary>In a meticulously compiled podcast Niklas Vaggh creates an anthology of atmospheres he constantly seeks in his dj-sets. Niklas Vaggh aka Sietse van der Meer has been collecting tracks for over three months to create the harsh, gloomy, uncompromising and haunting mix he envisioned.

At a young age Sietse was already into the hard styles of music. A characteristic also evident with previous artists who contributed to the series. Although Sietse listened to hardcore, he resisted strongly against sectarianism, the capturing of styles and people in boxes and conventions. This resulted in a broad orientation, during which he listened to a wide range of music, ranging from early hardcore and oldskool to metal. He played in a nu-metal band where he scratched using his hardcore records. It was around ‘95 that he started making his own beats, enriched with samples he took from films. Core values of his musical orientation are melodic melancholy, rhythmic continuity, a mysterious gloom and a certain level of relentlessness.

These values are still key to his musical orientation, although nowadays he can also appreciate the more subtle, deep sounds instead of the distorted beats or a squealing guitar. This is also goes for the art of omission, a feature prevalent in the Berghain sound. Next to these features, labels that sought their own unconventional way to sound (such as Planet Mu and r_AW) have had major influence on Niklas Vaggh in recent years.

Visually Sietse is attracted by artworks full of contrasts, expressive colours and strong shapes. These elements and the dark and sinister atmosphere are also present in this podcast’s accompanying artwork “Shimmering”, a picture taken by Russian photographer Gueorgui Pinkhassov full of both mystery and colour. A picture that shows how nature can create both magical moments and extreme dangers, these elemental forces pose the most adverse of conditions and impossible challenges of unfathomable dimensions.

<itunes:summary>According to DJ+ there’s a big difference between mixing at home or at a club. For the 8th FIBER podcast he uses the broad spectrum of contemporary bass music to both surprise the listener and play the tracks he likes and wouldn’t normally play in a dancefloor oriented mix.

DJ+ aka Paulus van der Heiden has a broad taste in music. His early passion for IDM music prepared a road to many different genres; from ambient to breakcore and from abstract to linear. It was mostly the rougher styles that motivated him to DJ. When he began playing in 2005 his aim was to shock the public by playing the nastiest beats and dirtiest of bass lines. As a member of the dubstep oriented crews Sonic Warfare and DUBieus, he created a platform for himself to achieve this goal.

Nowadays, Paulus declares that he has matured and his sets are more composed than before. Thankfully, dubstep has undergone the same transformation and evolved into a hybrid style which is not easily categorised, much like an undefinable dreamworld with pieces of memories and objects, that have the feel of something familiar and alienating at the same time. This is also true for the ‘contemporary bass’ music aesthetic. A style that covers anything that lies between 125 and 140 BPM with a shitload of bass. A vague description but familiar at the same time as the style is packed with references to old school, rave, jungle, 2step and techno. Because of this wide basis, DJ+ has steadily been able to take advantage of his early experiences; starting off with a set that builds up to a certain vibe and when the time is right surprising the crowd with a classic. With his experience he has also come to learn and appreciate the hypnotic groove of a 4x4 beat, an influence also found in the convergence of styles within ‘contemporary bass’ music.

This hybrid style is also reflected in visual terms. As accompanying artwork for his podcast he chose the work of Dutch video artist Saskia Olde Wolbers. This London based artist makes beautiful dreamlike impressions where organic shapes blend with architectonic backgrounds. These alienating images hint to a more recognisable reality and move the viewer to be carried away, just like his mix does.

<itunes:summary>The seventh podcast has been compiled by Julien Mier, a versatile artist whose music can’t be labelled easily. In his collaboration with Daan Kars the young musician has proven to be a great match for FIBER. Together they have created an audio-visual piece that was released on the net-label of our Utrecht based friends of Born Digital.

The mix consists of unreleased tracks by Dutch artists and provides a promising glimpse into the future of electronic music. Julien has chosen ‘the city’ as a theme for the podcast. The city is a place that owes its existence to the technological revolution, creating an abundance of job opportunities with factories as the cornerstone of a society that have adapted to the rhythm of its mechanisms. The theme is not only represented by dark metallic soundscapes and melodies but also by the serene tranquillity that characterises city parks. Both sides are intertwined in Mier’s hybrid music style.

This particular style can be drawn back to his father’s passion for collecting rare and obscure music, including releases by Captain Beefhart and Mouse on Mars.
After being introduced to these artists, Julien started exploring the works of Warp Records artists, such as Autechre and Squarepusher. Besides these influences, the solo works of Thom Yorke also inspired him to start producing. During his study at HKU, Julien became fascinated by the crossover between 2step, garage and techno. A good example of this is 2562, who is known for organising his death-like and static sounds in an organic and playful fashion in order to bring his music to life.

Even though Julien used to prefer the security of his own comfort zone, he now chooses to experiment and explore his limits, taking risks by choosing Bansky as his source of visual inspiration. This graffiti artist uses provocative messages to decorate cities. In addition to this, the dainty styles of installation artist Jean Tinhuely and art nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha did have their influence on him as well.

Tacheles, a squat in Berlin, is a perfect illustration for this podcast, as it brings all the works of these artists together. It is a location known for its graffiti, activist heritage and courtyard inhabited by figurative sculptures made of iron and other industrial materials.

As you know, FIBER presents young artists whose audiovisual performances exemplify how digital technology enriches contemporary art. Therefore we are proud to announce our presence at “Three Days of A”! At this event we will host the ambient sounds of Void Pointers, the eclectic style of Julien Mier and the exhilarating live performance of Distant Drummers - forged together with visuals by Born Digital and others. If you are as pleased by this podcast as we are we would like to invite you to experience the real deal at De Verdieping (TrouwAmsterdam) on november 26th 2011.

<itunes:summary>The sixth FIBER podcast is the premiere of Urkelle, the pseudonym under which Steve Mensink will be releasing his deeper, more experimental work. This mix proves that Steve can easily vear away from the 125 bpm rut and it takes you on a journey through an obscure spheric soundscape of pulsating sub-basses, laidback beats and magical melodies; much in contrast to his more house oriented work he has been showcasing at festivals and clubs, which he'll be mixing under his other pseudonym “Frits Wentink” in the future.

Steve grew up in Nijmegen, where he began producing at an early age and like a real ‘Nijmegenaar’ befits, he was a regular at the Planet Rose parties hosted by Darko Esser at Doornroosje. As he began producing at a more serious level, he moved to Utrecht to study audio design and musicology. The skills he attained during his study can be heard in this podcast, which has been composed solely of his own unreleased material. Incorporated in his mix are melodic influences, dating from early 20th century French piano music, such as edits of “Louange à l’Ëternite de Jésus” by Olivier Messiaen and fragments of the work by Maurice Ravel. Next to Steve’s edits of these French masters, the podcast has been enriched with vocals by Loes Jongerling.

Aside from producing music, Mensink also builds his own midi controllers. These devices have beautiful wooden casings and are portrayed as still lifes on his website. The handmade controllers serve not only as a technological aid for music production, but also as a visual enhancement. A good example is the controller of which Steve chose the illustration as artwork for this podcast. The positioning of the buttons leads to a chaotic pattern that suits the granular synthesis technique this controller is intended for. As such the controllers are a guide/model to understanding Steve's music.

<itunes:summary>Vinyllover Mattikk treats us to a vicious techno set with an occasional trip to raw analogue house, ending with deep dubstep.

The talented DJ explores the ambiguity of dubstep and techno, characterized by its 4x4 beats and completed with deep subs and dubby synths. Important influences to Mattikk are Scuba, Martyn, 2562, Sigha, Marcel Dettmann, Shed, Shifted, Boddika, Shackleton and Burial.

“I don’t like happy music much.” Mattikk says, as he looks back at his musical development. His love for the darker side of music has its roots in the days of UK hardcore, breakbeat and drum & bass. Over time he also began exploring the element of techno. Productions by Raiden (Offkey/Renegade Hardware), Current Value (Position Chrome) and the deep bass lines found on albums by Burial (Hyperdub) , Pinch (Tectonic) and Vex’d (Planet Mu) were amongst his sources of inspiration. Along this road his taste evolved towards the crossover between the sub-streams of dubstep and techno, with Surgeon’s perfectly balanced sets as his great example.

The versatile nature of this talent can be drawn from the gigs he plays. He performed several times at Club R_aw, did a couple of mixes for the DUBieus crew in Utrecht and he’ll be playing Closer at the Melkweg this august.

In a world that is becoming more and more digitized, Mattikk remains a faithful vinyl collector. Being able to touch, smell and see the music is what makes this medium so attractive. Apart from this, vinyl distribution offers the opportunity to focus more on the design of record sleeves, like labels such as 3024 and Swamp81 do.

The illustration Mattikk chose for this set is "Whitechapel Road" by Ashes57. With its busy London shopping street, showing all sorts of incoherent elements, it serves as an analogy for different cultures coming together into one cohesive techno set.

<itunes:summary>The fourth podcast by Mohlao picks up where he left off his live set at FIBER festival earlier this year; with grim electro sounds of a dystopian techno future.

The talented producer, who is currently studying film in Brussels, grew up in Leeuwarden. This city in the north of the Netherlands is a breeding ground for talent with artists like Delta Funktionen (DF) and Conforce; frontrunners in the Dutch techno scene. Earlier this year Mohlao and DF released their spacious dubtechno experiments under the moniker Inward Content. The influence of Versalife aka Conforce is also clearly present in this podcast. They all seem to explore a more spiritual approach to techno that expresses their personal feelings towards music and life.

Is it the vastness of the Frisian countryside that is responsible for these gloomy sounds? According to Mohlao his visual inspiration comes from movies like Vozvrashchenie (2003) by Russian director Andreij Zvyagintsev. The characteristics of this movie, with its empty landscapes and impressive cinematography, clearly resemble the moody atmosphere of dubtechno. On the other hand, his electro vibes could be drawn back to Weimar cinema.

The visual techniques employed in Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920), a motion picture also mentioned by Mohlao, were iconic for the German expressionistic film style; diagonal lines, geometric shapes, chiaroscuro effects and slanting rooftops all together creating a disturbing and emotionally charged atmosphere. This electro set with its dystopian miasma and punishing beat could serve as a perfect soundtrack.

<itunes:summary>The third podcast is mixed by Elvon Ludwig aka Luuk Meuffels, who resides at an intriguing venue in Utrecht: a residential home, that on occasion, by means of deaf neighbours and a powerful vintage MFB soundsystem, transforms into ClubStreetway (CSW). At these parties, Ludwig is responsible for the great afterhours vibe that makes it impossible for people to go home. This mix gives a good impression of these mysterious sets, shifting from atmospheric soundscapes to dubtechno and hazy house.

As a teen, Luuk listened to rock and punk, radically shifting to hard techno as a youngster should. From this point onwards he started to develop his musical preferences, selecting and refining his taste into a genuine love for techno, ambient and experimental beats. Important influences are Italian techno-don Donato Dozzy, German soundscapee Move D and his pilgrimages to clubs like Fuse and Berghain. His musical taste makes him stand out among others, however his metier in the first place is based on visuals. In 2010 Meuffels concluded his education with the prize winning installation Galtung Triangle. This piece embodies his artistic goal of merging sound and visuals, a goal uniform to FIBER festival where he’s responsible for stage design and the VJ line-up.

Luuk questions how the atmospheric element in electronic music could be visually amplified by implementing analog input. The work Rheo by Japanese artist Ryoichi Kurokawa shows how analogue materials and digital processes result into an expressive audiovisual language. An enthralling motive for this set, illustrating how sinister atmospheric music could be visualised by a combination of analogue textures in a digital space.

<itunes:summary>Distant Drummers is a collective that strives to bring the best of two worlds together. Originating from a grindy squatting scene, the group recently performed at the sterile environment of the Stedelijk museum of contemporary art in Amsterdam. Their music aims to bring forward the human in the machine by creating sound experiments with analogue gear and combining them with the conveniences of digital effects and recording. This results in a strict solid four to the flour beat with live improvisation on top, giving the techno aesthetic some breathing space.

For this mix two of the members of DD, also known as Artefakt, used their own material, as well as that of likeminded groups such as Morphosis, the scrap instruments of African group Konono no1, and the diverse appeal of the spontaneous house sound by the German label LiveJam records.

The musical narrative is based on the geometrical patterns designed by renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno, who wrote numerous books on the Art of memory. Bruno describes by means of geometrical patterns how a cognitive process is connected in parts of the brain. These patterns were conceived by DD as a road through their musical landscape were time, as in a good mix, can be forgotten. Raw but tight!

<itunes:summary>Dubberdink has been developing a distinctive sound for himself; deep dub sounds influenced by labels such as Basic Channel and Echochord, next to Chicago influenced house or the more minimalistic sounds by labels such as Pokerflat Recordings. This podcast superbly showcases these influences and starts off nice and deep. As the mix slowly unfolds we get into gear with some delightful uplifting house sounds. Dubberdink visually associates his set with the playfulness of the Cobra (Copenhagen Brussels Amsterdam) movement of the fifties. Just like Fiber, the movement aimed for a broader network of cooperation between artists unifying them in a shared aesthetic. The movement sought its inspiration in pure art made by children. This idea of primitivism is also apparent in electronic music these days. Dubberdink’s mix has a strong reminiscent feeling to Chicago house and is therefore a great example how to push things forward by returning to the roots of house music.</itunes:summary>
